Automating monthly investor updates for a seed-stage startup
Founder writes 3 bullet points, gets a polished update
The Problem
A seed-stage founder was sending monthly investor updates. The process should have been simple, but each month she'd:
- Pull metrics from the dashboard and format them
- Write 3-4 paragraphs of narrative
- Wordsmith for an hour because investors judge writing quality
- Format the email properly
- BCC 23 investors
Total: half a day per month, and often delayed because it felt like a chore.
The Solution
A Claude Code automation with a dead-simple input process:
The input
The founder writes a bullets.md file each month:
markdown
- Revenue: $47K (was $41K)
- Burn: $62K
- Runway: 14 months
- Hired first sales rep, starts March 15
- Closed 3 design partners for new product
- Lost Acme Corp deal (they went with incumbent)
- Need intros to: Series A investors, enterprise buyers in fintechThat's it. 5 minutes of typing.
What Claude Code does
- Reads the bullet points
- Reads the previous month's update (for context and tone matching)
- Pulls metrics from a dashboard CSV export
- Generates a polished investor update with:
- Formatted metrics table with month-over-month changes
- Narrative paragraphs matching the founder's voice
- Clear asks at the end
- Subject line
The output
A update_march_2026.md ready to paste into Gmail.
What Made It Work
The CLAUDE.md included 3 previous investor updates as examples. This was critical — Claude matched the founder's writing style almost perfectly because it had real samples to learn from.
We also included rules like:
- "Never use the word 'excited' — I don't write like that"
- "Always lead with the single most important thing that happened"
- "Keep the ask section to 2 items max"
Results
- Time saved: ~3 hours/month
- Consistency: Updates go out on the 1st, every month, no exceptions
- Quality: Two investors commented that the updates had gotten better
